All About Me – by Elizabeth Smart – 9/5/02
Smart Family Statement - 6/28/02
Smart Family response to charges filed 3/18/03
Early on the dark Wednesday morning of June 5th 2002 - fourteen year old ELIZABETH SMART was taken from her Federal Heights, Salt Lake City home at gunpoint. Her younger sister, Mary Katherine, 10, witnessed the abduction. She described the suspect as a man about "the height of her brother Charles (5' 8")," wearing light colored clothes and a hat. She said his voice seemed familiar, but couldn't place him.
The Smart family began to suspect Richard Ricci. He had worked in the house for almost three months and the children knew Ricci. He stole from them and lied to them. But Ricci was over 6 feet tall.
The police investigated the 48-year-old handyman Richard Ricci, but never charged him with kidnapping. Ricci died on August 30 from a brain hemorrhage while serving a sentence in the Utah State Prison on charges of burglary relating to the Smart family.
Ricci's widow, Angela Ricci, told reporters, "I'm grateful that she's alive." She said her husband told her, "I had nothing to do with this…I can't believe that they think I did this."
About the middle of October, Mary Katherine came to her parent’s room and said, "Dad, I think I know who it might be." She identified a man who had worked in the home for one day in November of 2001. Lois and some of the children had met him downtown as he was asking for spare change. He was clean, soft-spoken, well-groomed, Caucasian, 5’8" tall, dark hair, and about 45 years old. He called himself "Emmanuel," but it seemed clear that this was not his real name, but had something to do with his self proclaimed evangelical calling as a preacher to the homeless. He told Ed that he and his sister were staying with someone in the valley and that they were traveling to different cities preaching to homeless. He took a bus to a stop close to their home and then walked to the house. He worked for five hours, helping on the roof and raking leaves. Law enforcement tried to locate him for questioning, but was unsuccessful. The Salt Lake Police developed a composite drawing made from Edward’s recollection from the previous year.
Edward Smart stated, "We are not saying this is the individual who kidnapped Elizabeth, however we encourage this individual, as we have all workers in the house, to come forward to be interviewed by law enforcement."
Ed Smart announced a new $10,000 reward for information establishing that Richard Ricci was not involved in the kidnapping. Other rewards included $250,000 for the safe return of Elizabeth Smart; $45,000 for information that will lead police to her location or information leading to the person(s) responsible for Elizabeth Smart's disappearance - alive or dead; $3,000 for information leading to the man who allegedly picked up Ricci at Neth's Auto Shop on June 8, 2002; and $3,000 for information leading to the individual who cut the window screen and attempted to break into Stephen Wright's house on the morning of July 24, 2002. Additionally, the Salt Lake City and FBI offered a $25,000 reward for information that will lead police to the location of Elizabeth Smart or information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Elizabeth Smart's disappearance.
Police were tipped to Emmanuel's whereabouts by two callers who had seen his photograph and knew he was wanted for questioning in Elizabeth's disappearance. The callers said they had seen a man resembling the suspect walking down a street with two females in the Salt Lake City suburb of Sandy.
The two people were Brian David Mitchell, 49, a drifter and self-described prophet who calls himself "Emmanuel" and Wanda Eileen Barzee, 57.
Sandy Police Chief Steve Chapman said when police officers confronted the couple "they were evasive in some of their answers." After further questioning, police were certain the man was Emmanuel and the girl was Elizabeth. At the time, she was wearing a wig, sunglasses, a blue overcoat and something resembling a veil.
Mitchell and Barzee were arrested and charged with burglary, kidnapping and sexual assault. They are each being held on $10 million bond and will soon undergo mental health evaluations.
Former U.S. Senator Jake Garn, a close family friend who participated in searches for Elizabeth, said it's his understanding that immediately following her disappearance, Elizabeth was hidden in the mountains, then taken to San Diego, Atlanta and only recently returned to the Salt Lake City area.
Elizabeth Smart was reunited with her family. They and the public rejoiced that she was found and found alive. While the 15-year-old slowly reclaims her life, her family has hired Los Angeles entertainment attorney Kelly Crabb to handle the more than 100 book and movie offers that have poured in.
