Smart Family response to charges filed March 18, 2003

The Smart Family met with the District Attorney’s office this morning and was assured that every step is and will be taken to insure that Elizabeth’s privacy and well-being is the top priority. We are confident that justice will prevail and fully support the District Attorney’s office in prosecuting these individuals to the fullest extent of the law.

Elizabeth’s new spark of life has inspired us all to persevere through the worst of life’s struggles. With desire to set new long-term goals to attend Julliard, Elizabeth exemplifies that the past cannot be changed and the future is to be achieved. When asked how her fingers are loosening up for the harp, she displayed a blister from her desire to practice in pursuit of her goal.

Elizabeth has become a faith-promoting miracle around the world. Many view her as a part of their own family as they let her enter their hearts, prayers, and thoughts.

Here is a poem about miracles a friend of the Smart family wrote for Elizabeth after her return. This friend had his own daughter abducted a few days after Elizabeth was taken. With the quick response of the community she was found and returned unharmed just hours after her abduction. Her quick return helped give the Smart Family hope that Elizabeth would be found.

Miracles

It’s been said of miracles:
"They do not still exist.
God is dead or abandoned
The children he once blessed."
Miracles have never ceased.
They never went away.
God’s hand is always with us
And his comfort stays.
But occasionally he demonstrates
With a reaffirming show
He hears and answers prayers and pleas
That we may always know
His hand creates the universe;
He eternally abounds;
His love for us is endless
And knows not any bounds.
