On December 24th, 2002 - LACI DENISE ROCHA PETERSON 's stepfather reported her missing to the Modesto, California police. Her husband, Scott, says his wife had planned to take their dog for a walk. She was last seen about 9:30 am PST walking her golden retriever at East La Loma Park, wearing black pants and a white long sleeve top. A neighbor found the dog and returned it to the backyard of the Peterson's Covena Avenue home. Scott Peterson, a fertilizer salesman, claimed he was fishing on the day Laci disappeared. A family relative says murder couldn't be involved because the couple were madly in love.
Investigators searched the home and the park. A volunteer center opened at the Red Lion Hotel. Thousands of flyers with Laci Peterson's photo and reward information were distributed and posted. Divers searched the Berkeley Marina and the San Francisco Bay. The reward fund reached $500,000. Rural and wetland areas were searched.
No one came forward to confirm Scott Peterson's presence at the marina or saw him fishing on his boat. A relative of Laci Peterson revealed Scott had an affair and also recently took out a $250,000 life insurance policy on his wife.
Scott's mistress, Amber Fry, made a public statement. She said Scott did not tell her that he was married.
Time passed. The expected day of birth for Scott and Laci's son passed (2/10/03.)
More searches. More vigils. More flyers.
Scott Peterson became estranged from Laci's family. They began to suspect him. Modesto police announced the case was being investigated as a homicide. The focus turned onto the husband.
The badly decomposed remains of a fetus and an adult woman were found about a mile apart, washed ashore in San Francisco Bay on the rocky shoreline of Point Isabel Regional Park near Richmond on Sunday, April 13, 2003 and Monday, April 14, 2003, respectively.
Late Thursday, April 17, 2003, authorities issued an arrest warrant for Scott Peterson. Modesto police, the California Highway Patrol, and federal agents had been watching the husband for months, using wiretaps, vehicle tracking devices and direct surveillance. Fearing Peterson might flee to Mexico, authorities arrested him in San Diego on Friday noon.
Later in the afternoon, the state DNA lab in Richmond announced the unidentified female remains were Laci Peterson and the fetus was the biological child of Laci and Scott Peterson.
On Monday, April 21, 2003 - Scott Peterson was arraigned and charged with double homicide. He could face the death penalty. Scott pleaded "not guilty."
The Jury trial began on June 1, 2004.
The Jury found Scott guilty on November 12, 2004.
On December 13, 2004 the Jury recommended the Death Penalty.
On March 16, 2005, the Judge agreed with the Jury and sentenced Scott to die by lethal injection.
He was soon transferred to San Quentin.

UPDATE 2007

In April 2004, the UNBORN VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE ACT was signed into law.
In December 2005, a court found Scott not eligible to receive Laci's $250K insurance. The money was given to Laci's Mother.
In 2006, Laci's Mother published a book:

"For Laci: A Mother's Story of Love, Loss and Justice."
