Linda Lovelace

1949 - 2002

Linda Lovelace

Ever hear of "Deep Throat?" The hit 1972 adult movie's star, Linda Lovelace, was perhaps the first mega porn star in our postmodern age. But she didn't do much else of much acclaim in the adult movie business? She did, however, go on to become an outspoken anti-porn advocate, witness, and author, who, ironically, aided the cause of feminism.
Lovelace was born Linda Boreman in the Bronx of New York City on January 10, 1949. She claimed her first husband, Chuck Traynor, forced her into "violence and pornography" at gunpoint. She began with a few sex shorts in the late 60's and early 70's. Then, fatefully, she was cast as the lead character in the pioneer adult film megahit "Deep Throat" where she displayed a unique oral talent. Deep Throat was the first adult film to fully break through into mainstream American consciousness. Everyone talked about "Deep Throat" and even old women snickered at the lewd jokes made on the late night talk shows. The novelization of the movie was in drug store paperback wire racks. The film was an overnight success and the qualitative peak of Linda's porn career. She became a superstar, the first adult film superstar. After the success of "Deep Throat," her name and reputation became a commodity in itself, and thus, a marketing tool. Her remaining performances were insignificant by comparison.
She divorced her first husband in 1973. She remarried to Larry Marchiano in 1974 and they had two children. Around 1980, she quit the porn business and became an anti-porn advocate. She testified before the Congressional Meese Commission on the dangers of pornography and how the industry dehumanizes women. She wrote her autobiography "Ordeal," telling the world that her relationship with her first husband disintegrated into a life of violence, rape, prostitution, and pornography. She traveled the lecture circuit on a crusade against pornography, speaking at colleges and with prominent feminists. Linda and Larry moved to Colorado in 1990. They divorced amicably in 1996, after 22 years of marriage, and remained close friends.
"Everyone might know her as something else,
but we knew her as mom and as Linda.
We divorced five years ago, but she was still my best friend."
- Larry Marchiano
Linda was in a car accident on April 3, 2002 just south of Denver and was taken to Denver Health Medical Center with massive trauma and internal injures. She was taken off life support and died about 3 p.m., April 22, 2002. Larry and their two grown children were with her when she died.
"I look in the mirror and I look
the happiest I've ever looked in my entire life.
I'm not ashamed of my past or sad about it.
And what people might think of me, well, that's not real.
I look in the mirror and I know that I've survived."
- Linda Boreman
