On July 19, 2004 Salt Lake City, Utah husband Mark Hacking reported his wife, Lori Hacking, 27, missing.   The community as well as the nation mobilized to find her.   The grieving husband checked himself into a  psychiatric hospital.  Investigators found out that Mark had purchased a new bed just hours before making his report to the police.  Further investigation found Mark Hacking to have the makings of a pathological liar, having told fictitious stories about himself and used an alias at times for no apparent reason.
Police believe that three days before Mark reported Lori missing she discovered her husband had lied to her about being enrolled in a North Carolina medical school.
They further believe Hacking threw her remains in a garbage container after stabbing her to death while she slept.
Authorities released a video of Hacking early on the morning of July 19 that shows him entering a Maverik Country Store to buy a tin of Camel Lime Twist cigarettes -- 18 minutes after the time police believe Lori died.
During the transaction, Mark can be seen checking his hands. He then drives off in Lori's car.
In the probable cause statement filed Tuesday, police also note that the tag on a mattress police retrieved from a dumpster outside the Hackings' apartment building matched the tag on the box springs inside their apartment.
A sales receipt from Bradley Sleep Center shows Mark Hacking bought a mattress there at 10:23 a.m., shortly after Hacking called police to report his wife missing. At 10:46 a.m., Hacking called police again to tell them he had found her car at the park.
Police arrested Hacking on evidence including a bloody knife found in his bedroom, a discarded mattress and a reported psychiatric ward confession.  He is on suicide watch in a mental health unit at the jail and has requested no visitors.
Hacking also allegedly told a "reliable" witness July 24 he had killed his wife as she slept and dumped her body in a trash bin, a court filing revealed Tuesday.
That tip, coupled with another from a neighbor and other evidence, are leading officers to believe they will eventually find the remains of Lori Hacking in a county landfill.
Their search through 3,000 tons of trash was to resume with the help of cadaver dogs.
A judge set Hacking's bail Tuesday at $500,000, Salt Lake County District Attorney David Yocom said.
Hacking's attorney, D. Gilbert Athay, did not return a phone message.
Yocom said he still is reviewing the case and asked police to conduct more witness interviews.
The prosecutor said he was uncertain he could file charges in the 72 hours required by law after Hacking's arrest and may ask the court for an extension.
Yocom declined to say whether he would seek the death penalty.
Lori Hacking had told friends she was five weeks' pregnant, based on a home pregnancy test. If her body is found and the pregnancy is confirmed, prosecutors could add an additional murder charge.
Lori's Family Statement
by Thelma Soares, Lori's Mother
"My family and I are profoundly anguished to lose Lori, our precious daughter and sister. Our lives will never be the same and we will grieve for her and miss her until the day we die. But when that day finally arrives, we know with absolute certainty that she will be there with open arms to greet us and our reunion will be glorious. Until then, we know where she is and who watches over her."
Conclusion:
Mark Hacking confessed he killed his wife.  He said he carried out the attack while his wife slept last July and then threw the body of the 27-year-old woman in a trash bin. Volunteers scouring a landfill found her decomposed remains about three months later.
Hacking, a hospital orderly, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. Prosecutors were unable to determine if Lori Hacking was five weeks' pregnant, as she had told friends. That meant the husband could not be charged with a capital crime.
On June 6th, 2005, Hacking was sentenced to six years to Life.
